OLD BAILEY “DEAF SPOT”
Twice in the course of the present session of the Central Criminal Court have the defective acoustic properties of the building been the subject of judicial criticism. During a trial before Mr. Justice Roche in Court No.1 , Sir Edward Marshall-Hall , K.C. , who was sitting at the extreme end of the first row of Bar seats, said he was unable to hear a witness, whereupon Mr. Justice Roche remarked: "I am told that that is the deaf spot in the Court." Yesterday the Recorder (Sir Ernest Wild, K.C.), who was presiding in Court No. 2, asked a witness to raise his voice so that counsel might hear. The authorities have tried to cure the defect by having wires stretched across the dome in each Court, while in Court No. L a sounding-board was some time ago placed over the witness-box.
