Judge condemns Britain's 'porous' border controls after convicted thief returns to country following deportation

DAILY MAIL online  01 May 2008

A judge today criticised British immigration controls after a convicted thief from Romania slipped back into the country after he was deported.
The Old Bailey's Judge David Paget told Ioan Gureanu, 32, he would be jailed for 30 months and deported again after possessing a skimming device for copying card details from cash machines.
Judge Paget said: "You are nothing but a nuisance and detriment to this country.
"You should be deported as you appear already to have been.
"So porous are our borders you apparently were able to come back without any difficulty."
Mr Gureanu, from Edmonton, north London, had pleaded guilty to having the device for fraud.
Tom Quinn, defending, revealed Mr Gureanu had said he picked up a packet of cigarettes by mistake and found the device inside the box.
Thomas Halpin, prosecuting, said Mr Gureanu was arrested a month ago when a Mercedes car was stopped near Fenchurch Street in central London.
The court heard that when Mr Gureanu was searched, the cigarette packed containing the device was found concealed down his trousers.
He had previously been jailed for two years in Manchester in 2005 for conspiracy to steal following an offence involving skimming cards, where £2,610 was taken.
Mr Gureanu had been deported and but revealed he had been back in Britain for four months before his recent arrest.
Judge Paget, who recommended his deportation after serving his new sentence, told Mr Gureanu: "I do not accept for a moment that you simply found this item.
"This offence is very prevalent and causes considerable difficulty for members of the public."
